CHRIS
Chris triple-majored at the UW, graduating with degrees in Physics, Astronomy and History. Four years later, Chris added to his accolades an MS in Mechanical Engineering. His passion for engineering and alternative energy led to a job at the Institute for Lifecycle Environmental Assessment. Chris believes “patience is the key to tutoring” and loves helping students with difficult concepts. In his words, “education is a joint exploration of ideas. I lead the way and share my experiences so that students will develop their own understanding of the subject matter. This experience is so fulfilling, it motivates me, and in turn the student, to achieve the educational goals that we both desire.” In his spare time Chris enjoys playing basketball and softball, and rocks in Nefarious Jones as singer and guitarist.

CLAY
Clay joins us fresh off a two-year stint teaching English in Japan, where he honed his tutoring skills in English and his language skills in Japanese. A world traveler, Clay has also lived in Indonesia, Ethiopia, and four different U.S. cities, and has traveled to every continent except South America and Antarctica. Clay is a firm believer that a good teacher adapts his teaching style to his students’ needs, rather than adapting the material he is teaching. Since this is easier on a one-to-one basis, he finds his style a natural fit for University Tutoring. His tutoring experience ranges from all ages in Japan to students at Lewis and Clark College. As an undergraduate at Lewis and Clark, Clay majored in International Affairs, with minors in history and Japanese. A self-described “plodding” reader as a child, Clay now is an inveterate reader of both fiction and non-fiction, and has a special interest in reading maps. Of the future, Clay says, “I dream of speaking seven languages, reading the world’s great literature, and talking philosophy with people around the world. And I dream of finishing Gravity’s Rainbow.”

Diane earned her BS from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma with honors in Chemistry and a minor in Math, and earned her MS in Chemistry from UW. She's patient and direct, and works to develop a good rapport with each student. "In every tutoring session," she says, "my goal is not only to assist the student with immediate needs, but also to guide him or her in becoming an independent learner." When Diane is not tutoring, she may be found sporting some serious (and original) Seattle Sounders fandom, snowboarding, practicing or teaching yoga, growing food on her Olympia farm, or supporting her favorite public stations, KEXP and KAOS. She gets a kick out of Found Magazine and often ponders word puzzles with her crossword crushes, Will Shortz and Rex Parker.

JEREMY
Jeremy has been a teacher at all levels, from inner-city elementary students to hand-picked groups of the country’s strongest teachers, as well as a variety of schools in between. In all cases, he has found effective learning to come from a combination of strong curriculum and appropriate teaching method. As a tutor working with other teachers’ curriculum, he looks for opportunities to show how the material is interesting and worthwhile. Jeremy values one-to-one tutoring as it provides greater leeway to work with each student according to her/his unique learning style. Strongly influenced by the work of Ted Sizer with curriculum and Howard Gardner with pedagogy, he loves showing students how they can access their own inherent abilities to learn.

SAHAR
Sahar is our first biology and chemistry whiz to come to us with an additional degree in philosophy! A veteran of laboratories and tutoring centers at the University of Washington and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Sahar brings experience in one-to-one tutoring that complements her experiences in a broad range of scientific fields. Sahar believes that learning happens best when it comes from the student, not the teacher, and thus she enjoys tutoring by “leaving hints” and helping students work toward a full understanding of the subject. Sahar has driven across the country—twice—and also traveled through Western Europe. Often found reading fiction of various stripes, Sahar is eagerly looking forward to the advent of commercial space flight.

TRAVIS
Travis believes in two types of education – “the first is built on a backbone of hard work and discipline, and involves the careful training of the mind through hours of patient study. The second is what you learn while you're taking breaks from the first. Either one without the other leads to an incomplete life.” As a tutor, Travis teaches from his own diverse experiences, tailoring his instruction to the manner in which his students think while imparting the essential values of humor, hard work and practice. With this holistic learning style in mind, Travis received high honors from the University of Utah, earning a BA in both English and History. He has chosen to continue his education at the University of Washington where he is currently pursuing an MA in History. In his free time Travis enjoys the alliterative allure of photography, poetry and politics. His fluency in French and conversational Polish is a tempered reflection of his love of travel and European adventure.
Subjects: History, Reading, Writing, Test Prep (PSAT/PLAN/SAT/ACT/ GRE/GMAT), Study Skills (6 - Adult) Travis is on leave during the first semester of 2009-10.
