At University Tutoring, we believe that the best way to prepare for any standardized test is in a one-to-one or small group environment. Work to improve scores is most effective when a diagnostic test is used to reveal both baseline scores and test-taking behavior. Your program will be customized to your needs when you and your tutor understand your starting score and how you arrived at that score.
For example, if you arrived at a score below 500 on an SAT section because you ran out of time and didn't finish the section, you will work to improve your score in a different manner from someone who achieved the same score by answering every question but missing many of them. In other words,we believe that the only way we can truly help a test-taker improve her score is by getting to know her, her test-taking behavior and by understanding the test very well. We strive to be the best at all three of these angles among the many test-prep agencies in Seattle. We've been doing standardized test preparation for nearly thirty years and we believe it shows in our results and the satisfaction of our clients.
Test prep tutors simply cannot tell a classroom of students what they should do to increase their scores because each person in the class will need a strategy that takes into account his own strenghts and weaknesses, his own guessing habits, his response to being put under time pressure, and his unique approach to the exact test that is being taken. The group classes that we teach are small enough that students in the class still receive individualized advice, and every class has one-to-one appointments for each student in the class to focus on his unique concerns.
Our test prep approach for all tests listed below combines content review and strategic training so that students understand thoroughly what is being tested upon and how. We work with each student to develop his or her 'plan' so that the test day goes smoothly and confidence is high. Along the way we hope that students learn some very interesting facets of themselves as test-takers and as thinkers that they might have never considered:
How do I approach being timed?
When I get anxious, am I afraid of something? What might that be?
Am I a good guesser on this test? Is my gut feeling usually right?
What are my strengths? How can I build upon them?
What are my weaknesses? How can I work with them?
Am I an intuitive thinker? Can I think like the test-maker?
Am I concrete thinker? How can I learn to read between the lines?
We will help you consider these questions and more as you prepare for your upcoming test.
